Personal profile

Research Interests

The overall focus of my research program is on the stress biology in response to various anthropogenic stressors in simple and complex exposure scenarios. I use a set of approaches and techniques to examine environmental toxicity, molecular mechanisms of toxicity, and genomic responses to engineered nanomaterials, metals, and pathogens. In addition to studying toxicity under acute and sub-chronic exposures, I am also interested in multigenerational effects and exposures to multiple stressors in invertebrates. I have have been working with model and non-model plant and animal organisms. One of the most frequently used model organisms in my research is a soil nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, which is a powerful toxicity model with a sequenced and well-annotated genome and a plethora of the functional genomic tools (e.g., transgenic, mutant strains and RNA interference) available for mechanistic studies. Recently I have also expanded my expertise to the field of environmental human health by working with UK-Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences (CARES) to examine interactions between epigenetics and exposure to environmental particulates in lung cancer in Appalachian KY residents.
