Dr. Trey Conatser is director of CELT. In this role he represents CELT and UK’s teaching community to stakeholders within and beyond the University, and he oversees CELT services, initiatives, and operations in pursuit of innovative, inclusive, effective, and engaging teaching and learning at UK. Trey has led and supported a range of efforts including international faculty development programs; online program development; the expansion of CELT support and advocacy for diverse, equitable, and just educational environments; the reinvention of educational development and teaching and learning in the wake of COVID-19; grant- and research-based projects related to teaching and learning; an increase in sustained, immersive, and high-impact CELT projects and programming; collaboration and leadership around institutional priorities such as transdisciplinary education and the rise of generative AI; and scaling and diversifying CELT services to meet the needs of instructors—and, ultimately, students—across the University.

Trey holds a doctorate in English from The Ohio State University with a specialization in writing, rhetoric, digital humanities, and pedagogy. He also holds a masters in English from the University of Nebraska with a specialization in creative writing and poetry. At Ohio State he began working in educational development as part of the storied Digital Media and Composition Institute. Broadly, Trey’s research has examined theories, practices, critiques, and innovations for technology-enhanced learning in the humanities. Specifically, he has investigated the relationship between computer code and writing pedagogy against the background of emergent fields such as critical and rhetorical code studies. His work can be found in publications such as College Teaching, Computers and Composition Online, and the Palgrave Handbook of Digital and Public Humanities. Trey has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in digital humanities, technical and professional writing, first-year writing, creative writing, literature, and preparing future faculty.
