    Biography

Professor Tiffany D. Atkins joins the College of Law where she will teach Civil Procedure, Family Law, and Race and the Law. Atkins previously served as an associate professor of law at Elon University School of Law, where she taught legal writing, Family Law, and Race and the Law.

Atkins' scholarship centers around race, equity, and human rights; more specifically, she researches how law, culture, and systems impact the ability of Black people, people of color, and members of marginalized groups, to exist freely and fully in society. Her latest article, These Brutal Indignities: Crimes Against Humanity in Black America—published in the Kentucky Law Journal—examined this in the context of international human rights and  its inability to curtail police or vigilante violence against Black Americans. Atkins has also published articles with the Michigan Journal of Race and Law and The Second Draft.

Prior to teaching, Atkins was a staff attorney with Legal Aid of North Carolina, where she litigated family law, public housing, unemployment, and educational justice cases throughout the Piedmont Triad. A proud first-generation college and law student, Atkins received her law degree from Elon University School of Law and obtained her B.A. in Political Science and African American Studies from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
