This grant was awarded by the American Council of Learned Societies and will support work on "The Personal Writes the Political: Responsibly Rendering Black Lives Legible Through the Application of Advanced Machine Learning to Anti-Apartheid Solidarity Letters". This is a multi-year artificial intelligence digital humanities project that is finalizing a workflow that utilizes handwritten text recognition (HTR) and named entity recognition (NER) to produce machine readable text and structured data from handwritten materials. This phase of the project will focus on development of a graphical user interface (GUI), training, and onsite installation. We will also conduct testing to determine its applicability outside of the domain of South African history.
