Grants and Contracts Details

Description

This project is an expansion/upgrade of an existing composting facility, as well as some additional materials handling upgrades on campus that will improve compostable material handling efficiency while reducing the use of plastics. This project will incorporate campus green and food waste into the animal waste composting facility at the C. Oran Little Research Farm (LRC) in Woodford County, Kentucky. All finished compost product will be screened and land applied on the LRC or utilized on the University of Kentucky (UK) campus to reduce nutrient input requirements and mulch demand. All necessary facilities, equipment, and personnel currently exist to transport the materials to and from campus and at the farm. The requests through this grant will allow for reuse of the finished compost on campus and improve the overall handling characteristics of compostable feedstock and the quality of the finished compost. The proposed expansion of the current facility will include a compost screening bucket for a skid steer, parts and pieces for upgrading and existing grinder, open top containers, and concrete retaining wall blocks.
