A Diagnostic Saliva Panel for Identification of Periodontal Disease # A Delta Dental Grant Supplement Proposal

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Abstract This proposal requests a grant supplement to enhance the development of a salivary diagnostic panel to identify periodontal disease. Funding will support the additional analysis of stored salivary specimens obtained from a previous Delta Dental Research Foundation grant supported project that studied ninety participants (30 healthy, 60 with Type 2 diabetes mellitus) who ranged in oral health status from healthy to severe periodontal disease. Specimens will be analyzed for immune modulatory factors (interferon-?, calprotectin/S100A8, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 [TIMP-1]) and one additional tissue destruction biomarker (matrix metalloproteinase-9) in saliva and the data will be merged with the existing dataset that contains information regarding other salivary proteins and the entire oral microbiome. The primary outcome is the development of a diagnostic panel that can identify periodontal disease with >95% sensitivity and >95% specificity from a drop of saliva. 1
