STATEMENT OF WORK
Dr. Daniel S. Dale
Dr. Daniel S. Dale is a spokesperson for the PrimEx Col1aboration which is undertaking to
perlonn a high precision measurement of the lifetime of the pi-zero meson in Hall B of
Jefferson Lab (E02-103). This effort involves the development of a considerable amount of new
scientific instrumentation including a 2000 channel calorimeter, as well as a pair spectrometer
and a new total absorption counter. This experiment is c=ntly in the midst of being installed in
Hall B with the commissioning with beam scheduled to occur in mid-September. The commissioning
phase wi11be fol1owed by a period of production data taking lasting most of October
and November of 2004.
Dr. Dale has been involved in the experimental design and planning of this experiment from the
beginning. He and his group at the University of Kenrncky were responsible for the design, con·
struction and commissioning of the PrimEx pair spectrometer and its associated electronics, and
have played a major role in design and construction of the total absorption counter and the
PrimEx Hybrid Calorimeter (HYCAL).
The work under this agreement will include the development of procedures and scheduJes for the
experiment. In conjunction with the other spokespersons, Dr. Dale will be responsible for the
IDtegration of the various components of the experiment. Specifically, he will ensure that these
components function together properly, meet space and power limitations, and satisfy Lab safety
concerns. He will directly supervise post docs and students working at Jefferson Lab doing
software design, electronics. and a.myriad of other critical tasks in support of these activities. He
will also help in coordinating all related activities with the Jette.rson Lab staff.
Tbe tasks will be completed in 3-months starting from September 1. 2004. A Research Report
summarizing the activities performed and completed under this order shall be submitted to Mr.
Mike Syptak. Jefferson Lab. not later than 15 days after the completion date.
