Grants and Contracts Details
Description
The University of Kentucky (UK) is one of only eight universities in the United States that has
colleges of Agriculture (CAFE), Arts and Sciences (CAS), Engineering, Medicine, and Pharmacy
on a single campus, leading to unique interdisciplinary collaborations and offering more than 200-
degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. CAFE and CAS serve the land-grant
mission of research, education, extension, and outreach, which are networked to the state''''s 120
counties through the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Services. To promote education while
maintaining cutting-edge research, we have established an analytical core in CAFE that houses
several gas- (GC) and liquid-chromatography (LC) units. This core provides important analytical
services for a wide range of applications and has capabilities to detect and measure multiple
metabolites. This facility also serves out-of-state researchers. To enhance our capabilities and
complement the existing analytical equipment we request a triple quadrupole (TQ) liquid
chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS) instrument for targeted-analysis of analytes that are
present at low levels and cannot be detected using our existing instruments. The LC-TQ-MS will
become part of the Center for Agricultural and Life Science Metabolomics (CALM) core and will
be available to researchers from CAFE, CAS, Chemistry, Engineering and Medicine as well as
researchers from other KY and out-of-state and overseas institutions. The instrument is also
essential for undergraduate, and K-12 outreach engagements. Acquisition of LC-TQ-MS will
provide access to critical, state-of-the-art, analytical facilities and ensure continued success of
ongoing research.
