Description
The purpose of this project is to compare a novel sensorimotor rehabilitation protocol for lateral ankle sprain against a standard of care protocol to determine if it is more successful at producing successful one-year outcomes and lower rates of re-injury and improved health. This will address the identified needs for evidence-support and reintegration strategies to improve understanding of the management of patient rehabilitation strategies throughout the rehabilitation process following neuromusculoskeletal injury. The project will validate an innovative rehabilitation approach while providing metrics of success using a variety of clinical and biomechanical markers. Specifically, in Aims 1 and 2, we will use common clinical outcomes and innovative metrics of central nervous system function to validate the short-term success of the rehabilitation. We will replicate these measures along with measures of re-injury and disability along with MRI of the ankle to indicate ankle joint health at a 1 year follow-up to provide evidence for long-term success. Finally, in our third aim, we will use our outcomes to develop mechanistic models to explain our anticipated successes from the novel sensorimotor rehabilitation outcomes.
