Description
Agricultural producers in Kentucky are faced with the challenge of managing nutrients on the farm from both an economic as well as an environmental perspective. Recent changes to the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) policies and practices have left farmers with additional challenges. In April 2013, the Kentucky Agriculture Water Quality Authority adopted an alternative nutrient management guidance document (Kentucky Nutrient Management Plan (KyNMP) for agricultural producers.
Although the KyNMP was written for use by farmers, some may still not fully understand the need to develop and implement a nutrient management plan. Conservation District employees, District supervisors, Cooperative Extension Agents, Technical Service providers (TSPs), and fee-for-service providers can play a key role in assisting farmers in the development and implementation of nutrient management plans. These individuals need training on how to develop a nutrient management plan using (KyNMP) guidance document and how nutrient management plans fit into their overall operation and environmental compliance.
Project deliverables include the designing of training materials, presentation of the KyNMP option to Conservation District employees, District Supervisors, and NRCS District Conservationists at the KACD Convention, classroom training sessions for Conservation District employees, District supervisors, Cooperative Extension Agents, Technical Service providers (TSPs), fee for service providers, etc. conducted for a total of 18 training sessions throughout the state over a period of one (1) year, and semi-annual reporting to the granting agency (Division of Compliance Assistance) in December 2013 and June 2014. The total budget for this one-year project is $63,900.
