Aligning the Science Teacher Education Pathway: A Networked Improvement Community

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Overview: The project, Aligning the Science Teacher Education Pathway (A-STEP): A Networked Improvement Community to address gaps in teacher training, is an Implementation and Improvement Study proposal within the Teaching Strand of the DRK-12. This project will study the use of a Networked Improvement Community (NIC) as a vehicle of reform to bridge the gaps across four areas of science teacher training and development within the local context at 9 participating universities. Faculty members at each NIC site will collaborate with stakeholders in their local teacher pathway to co-plan and implement reform to better align supports used to align curriculum development and teaching to the vision of NGSS (NRC, 2013) in science teacher training (credential) programs with those that new teachers encounter entering their local school districts. In addition to collaborating within their local context, the NIC members will also share expertise across the NIC to increase understanding of reform efforts in science teacher education pathways across these varied contexts and how these contexts influence the reform efforts. These NIC sites vary in context by differences in the university credential programs, demographics of the pre- and in-service teachers they interact with and the demographics of K-12 students in the local communities they serve. This project does not aim to find a singular best approach, but rather mapping and organizing that variation to better understand how to facilitate change and align the teacher pathway within these varied contexts. This understanding will be evidence-based and disseminated through exemplars, video clips, and curricular examples and teaching models within a variety of contexts through the project website. These products and research produced by A-STEP will be broadly disseminated through state and national conferences and networks of programs with which the California State University, East Bay (CSU East Bay) and core partners collaborate.
