Description
Current research suggests that musical training alters brain structure in
cognitively healthy individuals. However, little is known about the impact of musical
training on cognitive reserve. This study aims to expand our knowledge about the impact
of musical training on cognitive reserve. We hypothesize that musical training will
positively impact cognitive functioning during the aging process.
The specific aims of this study are as follows:
Specific Aim 1: To examine musical participation and cognitive functioning in older
adults to determine if those with musical training display less cognitive decline than
those without musical training.
Specific Aim 2A: To examine musical participation and cognitive functioning in older
adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to determine if the proportion of individuals
with musical training will be lower than the proportion of individuals without musical
training.
Specific Aim 2B: To investigate time to transition to MCI in individuals with and without
musical training to determine if there are differences in transition times between the two
groups.
