ARS/SCA: Factors affecting carbohydrate and secondary metabolites in pasture

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

We will obtain seasonal and diurnal carbohydrate profiles of common Central Kentucky pasture plants. When combined with weather and soil data we will be able to provide horse owners with information about conditions and/or annual periods when the carbohydrate profiles would be expected to pose the greatest risk for laminitis-prone horses. Comparing trends in phenolic content with trends in carbohydrate content may help to determine if further research into the interaction between phenolic content and PAL is warranted. In addition we will assess new grass varieties that are developed for ruminants and which may find their way into equine pastures.
