ASCO-ACCC Pilot Project: Tool Pilot Study

Project Title: ASCO-ACCC Pilot Quality Improvement Project Abstract The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Association for Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) are collaborating on an initiative to develop structured strategies to increase clinical trial diversity of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in cancer treatment trials. The initiative which is led by ASCO-ACCC, will develop resources to support practices that want to enhance their screening and enrollment of diverse populations. Markey Cancer Center (MCC) was selected as one of the centers across the nation as a participating site in this ASCO-ACCC led quality improvement program. The goals of the quality improvement project are to establish the feasibility, utility, and face and content validity of a Site Assessment Tool and an Implicit Bias Training Program across different settings. Objective 1: To develop and pilot test a Site Self-Assessment Tool that assesses site enrollment performance and factors, such as procedures and programs, that affect who is screened for and offered cancer treatment clinical trials. Objective 2: To develop and pilot test an Implicit Bias Training Program which aims to help researchers acknowledge and/or mitigate implicit bias across research and care teams related to who is offered cancer clinical trials. The pilot project involves Markey Cancer Center’s completion of a: (1) Site Self-Assessment Tool and (2) three MCC staff/faculty participation in the Implicit Bias Training Program. The MCC Associate Director of Cancer Health Equity will serve as site lead to facilitate Markey’s participation in all project activities.
