Grants and Contracts Details
Description
KYTC will be letting a contract to Rosphalt 4 miles of Interstate 65 (northbound and
southbound) in Jefferson County. There are approximately twenty bridges which will
have deck repairs and then will be resurfaced with Rosphalt. There are questions about
what happens with chloride contamination in the concrete bridge deck after the
resurfacing. The resurfacing may decrease the presence of chlorides at the
Rosphat/concrete interface if the Rosphalt remains impermeable or it could collect
chlorides if they travel through the Rosphalt and result in increased contamination.
KTC proposes collecting concrete deck samples for chloride assessment prior to
resurfacing. The samples will be collected in a wheel path and a gutter of each bridge.
Chloride content of the various decks and deck locations will be determined by
laboratory analysis of the collected samples.
A memorandum report will be issued documenting sampling dates, locations and
chloride content.
Follow-up chloride assessment would be conducted under the "Long Term Monitoring"
task at intervals determined by KYTC.
