Description
Over the last decade, research has shown that Black babies are twice as likely as White babies to die before their first birthday if conceived naturally and three times as likely to die if conceived by ART. Additionally, Black women using ART are significantly more likely to have miscarriages than White women. Due to these health inequities and the challenges of navigating multiple systems of oppression, more research is needed to understand the challenges Black female same-sex couples face while using ART. The most recent research on Black female same-sex family formation and parenting was collected in 2003. Consistent with UNITE’s mission of health equity, diversity, social justice, and engaging underrepresented populations, the overall objective of the ART for Hope Project is to lay the groundwork for a larger project that will have a direct impact on the reproductive health outcomes and familial well-being of Black queer women and couples. This project aims to reveal factors influencing Black female same-sex couples’ hope and resilience throughout their family planning process using an intersectional and Black feminist approach to a multilevel interview design. This study has two aims: 1) To explore the lived experiences, challenges, and sources of social support of (n=15) Black female same-sex couples living in Kentucky (KY), Georgia (GA), or North Carolina (NC) who are currently using ART or have used ART within the last 24 months and 2) To determine the desirability of a multigenerational peer support group for Black female same-sex couples (who are currently using ART). Both aims will be addressed through in-person semi-structured couple interviews (n=15) and individual autobiographical interviews with each participant (n=30). This multilevel interview design will allow us to capture observational data and interview data. This multistate study includes personnel from the University of Georgia to lead the Georgia interviews.
