Description
The Department of Agriculture is the Official State Agency for administering subparts E and F of the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) and recognizes a need for disease surveillance,
educational outreach and diagnostic availability for small bird producers and back yard flocks, upland game bird and high risk flocks.
Department of Agriculture, in order to ensure compliance with KRS 257.020 and 302 KAR 20:240, has determined the importance of enhancing H5/H7 Avian Influenza surveillance cooperatively in the state and
aiding in the identification, control and elimination of H5/H7 Avian Influenza in Kentucky through testing of poultry within the state.
The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is available and qualified to conduct such testing for Avian Influenza Disease.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has received a grant of federal funds from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection Service Veterinary Services
to enhance the Avian Influenza Disease program activities.
KRS 246.055 authorizes the Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to receive and distribute such federal funds.
