Building State Health Department Capacity to Develop and Utilize Viral Hepatitis Epidemiological Profile

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Due to the growing public health crisis at the intersection of the opioid abuse crisis, hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infection epidemics across the state, as well as recent policy changes impacting both HCV reporting and access to HCV treatments with Kentucky Medicaid, there is an urgent need to develop a statewide viral hepatitis epidemiologic profile in Kentucky. The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH), in partnership with the University of Kentucky (UK) will establish a Viral Hepatitis Epidemiology Working Group and assess the morbidity and mortality of viral hepatitis in Kentucky as well as assess healthcare utilization through a variety of data sources, including hospital discharge claims data, Medicaid claims data, Kentucky Cancer Registry data, laboratory reporting and surveillance data, and death certificate data. A statewide Viral Hepatitis Epidemiologic Profile (VHEP) report will be prepared and distributed to healthcare providers, public health professionals, academic partners, and policy makers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
