Casting Education for Pediatric Patients in the Form of a Children's Book

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Most post-casting ED visits and unplanned cast changes are unnecessary resulting in increased healthcare costs and demands. In most cases, issues reported during these visits could be addressed with patient education. Effective discharge instructions include verbal communication and also written and visual information. One limitation is that discharge information is not delivered at the reading level of a pediatric patient. This project will take a multi-pronged approach by augmenting current discharge procedures with age- appropriate education directed to pediatric patients themselves. The proposed education book will provide knowledge and graphics about the fracture, cast duration, process for removal, and activity restrictions at a reading level appropriate for pediatric ages. Potential positive downstream effects would hopefully be seen in clinic staff receiving less calls about cast care, and the ED seeing fewer representations for cast-related issues such as wet or broken cast
