Description
CC* Team: KYRC - A Kentucky Research Computing Team Overview: We propose to form a regional
cyberinfrastructure (CI) support team called the Kentucky Research Computing Team (KyRC). KyRC
will be a collaborative state-wide support group focused on the advancement of research through the
application, education, and support of advanced CI. The multiinstitutional project team will be comprised
of representatives from the public universities and the community and technical college system, including
Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS),
Kentucky State University (KSU), Morehead State University (MSU), Murray State University, Northern
Kentucky University (NKU), University of Kentucky (UK), University of Louisville (UofL), Western
Kentucky University (WKU), Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), and the Kentucky
Regional Optical Network (KyRON). Leveraging existing regional organizations, such as KyRON, and
institutional CI groups at UK and UofL, the project team will work in collaboration with university
provost and college chandlers to advance science and engineering across the Commonwealth of
Kentucky.
Intellectual Merit: Scientific discovery today is being enabled through compute-intensive and
dataintensive research that would not be possible without advanced cyberinfrastracture (CI). KyRC will
provide researchers with direct access to expert CI engineers that can help apply, consult, and support a
wide-range of computational systems and research disciplines. KyRC will develop community
engagement events to help identify researchers who could benefit from advanced CI, but either have no
access, expertise, or training in CI.
Broader Impact: The goal of KyRC is to serve a broad range of institutions in the state of Kentucky
including higher-eduction, city (smarter city), and community education efforts. In addition to state-wide
support, we will participate and collaborate with leading regional and national CI entities to facilitate a
national community of expertise. The KyRC team will be comprised of three full-time CI Engineers and a
Community Facilitator that will be assigned to physically and virtually engage, support, educate, and train
organizations in the state of Kentucky and beyond. The primary goal of the KyRC team is to focus and
build upon existing CI expertise while engaging with institutions that can benefit, but would otherwise be
without expert CI support. The team aims to serve a broad range of organizations throughout the state of
Kentucky where curricula, mission, or focus is relevant to science and engineering. In addition, we aim to
educate and support underrepresented populations and institution types in areas of advanced CI.
