Housing Futures Abstract
A lack of accessible, affordable housing in Kentucky has been a long-standing
barrier to independent living for people with disabilities. This project aims to create a
repository of resources around housing planning and choice, thereby expanding the
options individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) have from which to choose.
Identifying housing options for people with DD requires assessing financial resources,
accessibility and usability. Accessibility assessment includes determination on whether
the built environment allows people to get into the spaces of the home necessary for
living, in addition to access of transportation options, critical services, and community
resources. Usability further assesses whether the individual living in the home can
effectively use the space as it is intended, including appliances, control of the
environment, and other features that contribute to a good quality of life.
The project will work to eliminate barriers to independent living for people with
intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Housing Futures project will build and
expand housing options for families across Kentucky in consideration of affordability,
accessibility, and usability. The work of the Housing Futures project will utilize personal
futures planning, a process whereby the person themselves determines the best
education, educational, employment, housing, and community participation options. .
Trainings will be held in person and online.
Major goals
Identify housing needs for 150 families that include a person with ID/DD statewide that
will receive the housing futures intervention. Partner with participants to implement a 3-
tiered intervention, including goalsetting, assessment, and intervention over a 90-day
