Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition at UNC-Asheville- "OVPR CURATE Program"

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The funding from the Office of the Vice President for Research funded my creative research travel and visual art preparation expenses over the course of the 2018 summer. This funding energized and facilitated my creative research activity by providing me with the resources to publicize and exhibit my ceramic sculptures. In preparation for going up for promotion to Full Professor, I am ramping up my exhibition practice and expanding the scope of the national and international exhibition venues in which I exhibit my work. Utilizing the funding from the Research Enhancement Grant (REG), I was able to create a new body of work, document the pieces, and participate in numerous exhibitions.

The first phase of the project entailed making and firing a new body of work. I participated in an invitational wood-firing event at the University of North Carolina in Asheville (UNCA). The loading and firing of the kiln took place May 8-13, 2018 and the unloading occurred May 15-16. 2018. I created ceramic sculptures in my studio at UK and then transported them to Asheville for the firing. The wood firing was an intensive and collaborative event. The kiln held over 500 ceramic objects and was fired continuously for 4 days. Each kiln accumulates a unique residue of ash and salts over many years of firing, giving each kiln its own surface characteristics. I was able to achieve the desired surface and glaze effects for my sculptures using this particular kiln.

The second phase of the project encompassed documenting the work, applying for exhibitions and preparing the work for shipment. I had my work photographed at MS Rezny Studios here in Lexington, and used the images to apply to many exhibits. These exhibits were extremely beneficial to my creative research endeavors and advanced my creative practice to a new international level. I met many gallerists and collectors, which I plan on staying in contact with to discuss further networking opportunities.
