Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Abstract:
The University of Kentucky Clean Indoor Air Partnership (CIAP) and its Radon Policy Research
Program faculty and staff will complete the following work to advance radon education
awareness and radon prevention science in Kentucky.
The overall intent of this project is to identify areas of Kentucky that are at highest risk for
radon exposure based on geologic rock formations. Our preliminary studies show that certain
geologic rock formations are highly correlated with radon levels. The goal of this project is to
create county ]level geographic maps to describe the geologic rock formations and home radon
values in the five counties currently under contract with the Kentucky Radon Program to
provide radon education and advocacy. We will gather and compile data from home radon
testing and the Kentucky Geological Survey to create user ]friendly county ]level maps and fact
sheets during the first four months of the contract period (July 1 . October 30, 2014). During
the next six months (November 1, 2014 . April 30, 2015), we will work with the county radon
programs to distribute the maps and related fact sheets to residents in the five counties via
community organizations and the media (unpaid), targeting the specific areas of the county
with rock formations known to have the highest radon levels. In the last two months (May 1 .
June 30, 2015), we will evaluate the impact of the radon education materials on overall home
radon testing as well as in the targeted areas of the five counties before and after distribution
of the materials. We will evaluate whether radon testing increased in the areas known to have
the highest radon levels.
CIAP will target five counties with a current state radon contract: Boyle, Estill, Lexington ]
Fayette, one county from the Barren River District Health Department, and one county from the
Northern Kentucky District Health Department. For the two health department districts, one
county from each of the two districts will be selected by Dr. Hahn after seeking input from the
health educator from each district, Dr. Rayens, and Dr. Andrews.
CIAP will obtain the latitude and longitude values for the homes with radon values available
through AirChek, Inc. and map the coordinates along with the geologic rock formations in the
five proposed counties.
County ]specific education materials, fact sheets and maps will be developed in ]house based on
the results and printed in individualized packets for each county. Materials will also be available
electronically to distribute via the health department fs website.
Education materials, fact sheets and maps will be shared with health educators from the five
counties via webinar or during radon coalition meetings. The materials will be distributed
during health educators f regular outreach activities including media education within their
counties, and electronically on their website. There is a small budget for initial printing of each
county fs materials, fact sheets and maps. Health educators will be welcome to reprint as
needed any and all of these materials as provided. The materials will also be made available on
our Radon Policy Research Program website:
http://www.mc.uky.edu/tobaccopolicy/Radon/default.htm .
CIAP team members (3) will attend and participate in the CRCPD National Radon Conference,
presenting results of the mapping and educational campaign as appropriate.
This contract includes compensation for the Program Administrator and Project
Assistant/Research Assistant along with a Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) Geologist to
perform the duties outlined in the scope of work.
This contract meets or exceeds the 50% match requirement. This contract includes cost share
of time for Dr. Ellen Hahn, Professor and Program Director; Dr. Mary Kay Rayens, Biostatistician;
