CMS/UK HealthCare Collaboration: Opioid Stewardship 2018-2020 (50/50)

In collaboration with other parties, both within the University of Kentucky and across the state, the UK HealthCare Opioid Stewardship Program aims to achieve the nine goals outlined below. These other parties may include, but are not limited to The Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), the Center for Drug and Alcohol Research (CDAR), UK HealthCare services (e.g., addiction medicine and obstetrics/gynecology), healthcare colleges within the University of Kentucky, and other institutions. From its inception through June 30, 2020, the opioid stewardship program aims to: 1. Reduce unnecessary opioid use through promotion of effective, evidence-based non-opioid analgesic strategies. 2. Employ and evaluate evidence-based, safe prescribing and use of opioids. 3. Improve assessment of pain and goal setting to maximize safety and efficacy of prescribed analgesics. 4. Empower patients to embrace comprehensive approaches to analgesia. 5. Evaluate and report data regarding opioid use, other analgesic strategies, and outcomes. 6. Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory standards among prescribers and the UK HealthCare enterprise. 7. Engage in community outreach to patients, prescribers, and other institutions in order to enhance opioid stewardship across the city and state. 8. Collaborate with healthcare colleges at the University of Kentucky to incorporate concepts of rational opioid use and non-opioid analgesics into curricula. 9. Support the research and education missions of the University of Kentucky as pertinent to opioid stewardship.
