Description
Abstract
This proposal develops a comprehensive framework, referred to as CalfHealth, that exploits
innovative communication, sensing technologies, and inferencing approaches to enable cost-
effective detection of clinical Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) and pre-clinical BRD in pasture-
raised cattle. CalfHealth exploits a hear tag sensor to monitor the cattle’s behavior. This information
is used with advance machine learning techniques to infer if a cattle is developing clinical or pre-
clinical BRD. This proposal also accelerates the adoption of the proposed technologies through
field experiments and participatory workshops designed to assess the social, behavioral, and
technological factors influencing dairy producers'' and consumers'' perceptions of the proposed
technologies.
