Description
We have proposed four new or continuing projects focusing on special populations.
First, Enhancing Tobacco Treatment in Community Mental Health Centers aims to 1) provide
tobacco treatment specialist training for providers within the CMHCfs; 2) assist the 14 CMHCfs
in KY to develop a tobacco control plan; and 3) develop web]based training materials for
providers that simulate brief evidence]based tobacco treatment interactions with patients in
the hospital and community settings.
Second, Tailoring Tobacco Treatment for the LGBT
Community will a) identify modifiable factors that predict successful smoking cessation among
LGBT individuals using the WHY registry, an existing dataset, and b) determine the acceptability
and efficacy of a pilot tobacco treatment intervention in LGBT friendly spaces.
Third, the Ecigarette Youth Prevention, Education, and Empowerment Program will a) implement and
evaluate an evidence]based youth e]cigarette peer]to]peer prevention, education, and
empowerment program, b) build capacity for prevention and education among youth and
young adults, teachers, administrators, and other health advocates via coordination of a youth
and young adult advisory group and professional development training, and c) conduct
surveillance of existing tobacco prevention, education, and empowerment programs in
Kentucky schools.
Lastly, the Increasing Access to Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training
project aims to provide 10 Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Tuition Scholarships with
preference given to tobacco control specialists in local health departments and health
professionals in areas of Kentucky without tobacco treatment specialists or who will serve
diverse and special population groups.
