Description
The utilization of a variety of pavement maintenance treatments are being
used more widely throughout the country and in Kentucky. It is anticipated that the use of these
techniques would improve the overall performance of pavements and allow for the best utilization
of available resources. This research will document the potential performance improvement
which might be expected for various treatments. To have a true pavement management system
we need to do forecasting and focus on remaining service life. In order to do that, we need to
know the effectiveness of the things we are currently doing.
As the Cabinet continues to implement their new Pavement Management System, this
type of information will be critical to allow for the stabilization of the highway network, by
eliminating peaks and valleys in the desired levels of performance. This information will also
assist the Cabinet in their implementation of a Pavement Preservation Program, which will focus
on improving the remaining service life by addressing the pavements which have the best costbenefit,
rather than always addressing the worst-first scenario.
