Description
DERBi PIE, a Database of Etymological Roots Beginning in Proto-Indo-European, is being
designed as the go-to resource for scholars and non-scholars to investigate the prehistory of
words in the Indo-European languages. The goal is to create a functional database that includes
entries from multiple etymological dictionaries, all cross-listed, and weighted according to
prominence and citation. In addition, the database will include search tools that allow researchers
to investigate matters beyond what is currently possible (i.e., identifying if a certain meaning
existed in PIE or a specific root shape), including searching for formations by semantic type,
morphological category, and even searching through digitized (and lemmatized) texts for specific
roots and formations.
