Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Few safety data elements are available for non-state-maintained county secondary roads. However, crashes on these roads can often be severe due to high speeds, narrow lanes, sharp curves, and severe roadsides. Of the 79,321 miles of public roads in Kentucky, only about 40,000 miles have asset inventory information in the Highway Information System (HIS). Having roughly half of all public roadway mileage wtih little or no asset inventory information makes using data driven approaches to improve safety on those facilities impossible. Adding safety attribute data is imperative to meet the MAP-21 objectives for an all-roads safety database.
