Engaging Youth, Serving Community 6 (EYSC6)

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Rural communities in Kentucky are plagued with a number of problems (i.e., crime, drugs) that counter opportunities for positive development among youth.·Many young people often engage in negative behaviors because of limited opportunities. On the other hand, few adults have taken a stand to help youth seek out and implement activities that can serve their community. This project will focus on existing community projects that have had success in demonstrating youth leadership at the local level. It will focus on targeting those youth with limited experience as community partners to give them an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills. An additional facet of the project will address getting more adults involved in the projects and ultimately encouraging youth participants to become involved in additonal community endeavors. The project will also examine how youth have increased their community Involvement and their perceived experiences as community leaders. The goals of the project are to: -Foster community youth development by encouraging youth voice and providing meaningful roles . -Foster adult development, by exposing adults to the skills and talents of youth who are changing communities. -Empower additional youth to engage in endeavors that improve communities and to increase skills so that youth can serve on boards and committees throughout the community .:. Increase the number of true youth-adult partnerships that are sustained over time, where youth and adults are equal and effective change agents
