Description
This proposal describes a workshop on the current state of cyberinfrastructure (CI) in the
EPSCoR jurisdictions. Its main purpose will be to find metrics for measuring the quality of
EPSCoR cyberinfrastructure, and to estimate these metrics vis-a-vis the non-EPSCoR states.
This workshop will be a follow on to the workshop held in Kentucky in October 2007, and a
natural metric will be to compare the state of cyberinfrastructure now versus three years ago.
One goal will be to measure the effect of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
(ARRA) stimulus funds. Information technology experts from all 29 jurisdictions will participate,
as well as policy leaders in the state and federal governments. It is proposed that this workshop
will be held in Arlington, Virginia, on October 7- 8, 2010.
Intellectual merit: One of the outcomes of this workshop will be an increased awareness of the
interaction of cyberinfrastructure on the progress of scientific research and education. An
important part of the presentations by the EPSCoR jurisdictions will be the applications, which
depend on the various components of the cyberinfrastructure. This will stimulate an increased
level of scientific activity.
Broader impacts: One of the aims of this workshop is to extend the usage of cyberinfrastructure
to applications outside of those areas of research and education that have traditionally been
dependent on computational resources. Also, related areas outside the academic community
will be greatly affected by advances in cyberinfrastructure. Examples include medical services,
energy, environment, and economic issues.
