Description
We propose creating an online mobile app with a web interface to address mental health literacy, suicide stigma and access to just-in-time care focused on prevention, intervention and postvention. We have reviewed multiple products available in other countries in preparation for this work, such as the iFarmwell app in Australia, but this progressive web app would be innovative in KentuckyThe online mobile app with web interface would provide: (1) Self-directed wellbeing modules which prompt for participants to set actionable goals to improve their mental
health.(2)Curated video testimonials of farmers who have navigated suicide ideation, suicide attempts, post-traumatic stress, and/or suicide loss.(3) Registration for caring card text messages. (4) A support group/mental health provider locator. (5) A telehealth feature that would involve piloting a decision tree/dialogue option on the app that would serve a ‘triage’ function to direct the user to an appropriate provider or service (e.g. a hotline for an imminent emergency or a counseling provider). The FRSAN funding would be used for iterative design of a prototype interface and initial user testing of the design for usability, acceptability and content. The development process would be conducted with students, faculty and extension faculty at Kentucky State University, an HBCU in consultation with Dr. Marcus Bernard, extension faculty at KSU. This project meets USDA Strategic Goal#4 and addresses SDA-FRSAN activities A-Farm Helplines, C- Support Groups and D-Outreach and Information Dissemination.
