Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Currently there is only one hemp crop profile published in the IPM center database, a 2023 crop profile for New York. A comprehensive guide discussing the different forms of production of hemp in Kentucky or other southeastern states and the associated common pests and diseases has not been published at this time.
Information surrounding hemp production and pest management is rapidly evolving, and recent surveys published during 2023 and 2024 indicate an updated crop profile is needed (Munir 2023; Smith 2024). Research has also revealed regional differences in diseases and pests among hemp producing states. The production recommendations and practices are also shifting as agronomic research trials are being published and as the hemp market shifts from a cannabinoid focus to more grain and fiber applications. Hemp grain is now federally approved for laying hen feed (AAFCO 2024). In addition, Kentucky passed a GRAS approval allowing up to 30% hemp for equine and broiler chicken diets (Harrison 2023).
A crop profile that sufficiently addresses updated guidance in regard to grain production will be of significant benefit to producers, extension personnel, and regulators. Further, grower production resources are scarce, and growers often rely on cannabis blog posts or unverified articles. Therefore, a comprehensive scouting guide that includes images, life cycle descriptions, and IPM management recommendations will greatly benefit hemp producers and extension personnel.
