Grants and Contracts Details
Description
The Center for innovation in Education launched in 2013 with support from the William and
Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. CIE leads the
Assessment for Learning Project which is building state and local will and capacity to
integrate formative assessment into comprehensive systems of assessments and anchors
the Hewlett Assessment for Learning Portfolio. As such, ALP is part of a Hewlett
Foundation strategy to increase the amount of instruction that facilitates deeper learning
competencies by spreading the effective use of performance assessment. Performance
assessment will be scaled through a series of direct, parallel investments in California,
Colorado, New Hampshire, and Virginia (all of which are participating in ALP) to set the
stage for policy and other supporting conditions that will facilitate broader, more informed,
and effective use of performance assessment.
We believe that supporting a learning orientation among the four-states will produce a level
of learning that functions at a scale greater than the sum of its parts and that structured
collaborations across the states, who enter from different contexts and perspectives but
with shared values, will yield more and better information about how similar advancements
in performance assessment can occur elsewhere.
