FRT 194, Experimental Deck Sealants and Pier Cap Coating on Interstate 471

KYTC is letting a contract to overlay several bridge decks on Interstate 471. KYTC Division of Maintenance personnel requested a recommendation for sealants to be applied to one bridge deck, I 471 over 6th Street, that is not being overlayed. KTC has identified several potential sealants, some of which are on other states’ List of Approved materials. In addition to the deck sealants KYTC Division of Maintenance personnel requested a recommendation for a thin film coating for one pier cap on the project. KTC proposes to divide the I 471 over 6th Street bridge into five test areas. In each of four test areas cracks will be sealed with a KTC recommended crack sealer and the deck will be sealed with one of six sealants on a project List of Approved Materials. The contractor can choose four of the Listed sealers, one for each test area, to be applied according to the manufacturers recommendations. The fifth test area will remain unsealed to serve as a control area. The contractor can choose one of the thin film coatings on a project List of Approved Materials to be applied according to the manufactures recommendation KTC will: 1. provide a recommendation for a crack sealer, 2. provide a project List of Approved Materials for deck sealants, 3. provide a project Approved List of Materials for thin film coatings for application to the pier cap, 4. assess the initial condition of the bridge deck and pier cap, including chloride content, 5. monitor the cleaning and sealing of the deck and pier cap, 6. prepare a report documenting construction activities, 7. and place the project on long term monitoring for continued performance monitoring.
