Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Purchase of specialized equipment: FontLab font production software.
Layman's description
This grant was used to purchase FontLab, an industry-standard software for the creation of typefaces regarding letterform creation, spacing, and file creation. The purchase of Fontlab enabled me to learn the software to draft my first complete font (Enrica [unpublished] 2018), allowing for more precise editing of these vector forms. In 2019, this same software was used to create a 278-character multi-language-compatible typeface as part of a summer Artist Residency through the Mackinac State Historic Parks (Mackinac 1895).
Mackinac 1895 has been presented through lectures at the King Library (Lexington, KY) while I served as the Spring Book Arts Lecturer in 2024, and presented at TypeCon, an international typography conference (Portland, OR), in 2024. This typeface will be shown in two upcoming solo exhibitions on site-specific typography at Gallery 621 in FL (2024), and at Crary Art Gallery in PA (2025).
In addition, the knowledge of this software has been useful in teaching typography, as I am able to offer insight into professional typeface-making software for interested students.
