Future Management Strategies for State Maintained Wetlands

  • Hopwood, Theodore (PI)

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

KYTC has property containing wetlands that were either created or purchased as compensation for other wetland takings (mitigation). After the Corps of Engineers (CaE) 5-year mandatory monitoring/ preservation period, those wetlands require continued maintenance to prevent problems such as flooding of adjacent properties and mosquito control. Other issues requiring on-going KYTC wetlands management/maintenance include: weir control to maintain proper water levels, beaver activities, fence maintenance, trespass prevention, and vegetation control. Additionally, wetlands have been naturally established along some KYTC rights-of-way as a consequence of the road building. Maintenance activities in those areas are also problematic.
