Description
The purpose of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing Scholars program is to
cultivate the next generation of PhD-prepared nurse leaders; these scholars are committed to long-term
careers that support discovery and develop science, strengthen and sustain efficient and optimal
preparation of nurses, and bring about transformational modifications in nursing, nursing science, and
health care.This proposal requests support for two PhD students during their doctoral education. One of
the purposes of this program is to increase the cadre of nurse scholars; thus, these scholars are
anticipated to complete their doctoral degree in 3 years. As part of this grant, RWJF will provide $75,000
per student over three years, while the College of Nursing provides an additional $50,000 per student
over three years. This total support is equivalent to $125,000 per student for the three year period. The
funds will be used provide a yearly stipend, tuition, and cover miscellaneous expenses and research
support. These fellowships will be used to recruit and support two exceptional students for full time
study in our PhD program. Once recruited and enrolled, these students will work closely with a funded
research mentor in the College of Nursing, and receive additional mentorship from a scientist in another
discipline within our university. In conjunction with this scholar development program, RWJF provides
multiple additional enrichment opportunities during this 3 year period to develop scholarship and
leadership skills.
