Serving as the federally designated Kentucky Office of Rural Health (KORH), innovation, research, education, service and community engagement are the driving forces that, for 30 years, have propelled the UK CERH forward in our mission to improve the health and well-being of rural Kentuckians. Taking a stand against overwhelming health disparities and health professions shortages and tackling barriers to improve health equity in underserved and hard-to-reach populations is at the heart of our work. Overview of the Project: KORH will collaborate with provider networks and key stakeholders across the Commonwealth in an effort to identify workforce needs in the areas of Primary Care, Mental Health, and Dental Care. Aligned efforts in recruiting and retaining providers to serve in Kentucky’s rural and urban underserved communities will work towards strengthening our health care workforce, addressing gaps in healthcare access, and ultimately improving population health and thus reducing health disparities. In an effort to address one or more of HHS’s and HRSA’s clinical priorities, this proposal incorporates targeted efforts aimed to improve access to mental health care and transform the workforce- by targeting the need. The mission of the KORH is to support the health and well-being of Kentuckians by promoting access to rural health services. Since 2003, the KORH has managed and provided oversight of the development, implementation and coordination of the Kentucky State Loan Repayment Program (KSLRP). For this funding cycle, KSLRP seeks to assist in strengthening systems of care across rural and underserved Kentucky communities by: Goal 1: Improving access to primary care in underserved communities. Goal 2: Improving access to dental care in underserved communities. Goal 3: Improving access to mental and behavior health care in underserved communities. Across-the-board objectives for each goal include: • Collaborate with key stakeholders to assist in effectively identifying workforce needs • Enlist practice site participation to better garner interest and confirm eligibility. • Engage with provider networks, professional associations, and post-secondary educational institutions in an effort to ensure a competitive applicant pool. • Administer a fair and equitable review process and timely contract management processes. • Foster a 1:1 relationship with each participant and site to ensure program compliance. • Monitor and evaluate program success through exit interviews and participant tracking.
