ABSTRACT - Healthy Communities
The Healthy Community 1-year effort from Special Olympics Kentucky supports state programs in working
towards meeting the 6 criteria to become a designed Special Olympics "Healthy Community". These criteria
help states ensure on-going health and wellness efforts for athletes, support successful healthcare provider
referrals, and assist programs in becoming financially self-sufficient in order to best serve the Special
Olympics athletes across the state. Kentucky''s effort is focused on the development of a medical referral
and follow-up process for athletes identified as high risk from health screening opportunities. Additional
health coaching resources will be developed to assist athletes with addressing these high risk conditions,
specifically supporting athletes with diabetes.
