Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Leakages along the gas path in modem turbine engines often hamper engine performance,
reduce efficiency and increase exhaust and pollution. This research focuses on I) design and
demonstration of new micro hybrid structronic mechanisms for engine clearance control and 2)
development of finite element analysis and design tool. The first year effort is to demonstrate
the fundamental concept, followed by detailed design and implementation of the hybrid
structronic mechanism, as well as comprehensive finite element design tool in subsequent
years. Applications of the hybrid structronic concepts to morphing of turbine blades/vanes will
also be explored.
