Description
OBJECTIVES: The obj ective of this project is to develop a process for a complete and systematic
evaluation of intersection design altematives. The aitematives should address operational and safety
effici ency for all roadway users. Intersection alternatives should consider both geometric design and
operational elements, such as number of lanes, auxilial)' lanes, lane usage, and traffic control. The traffic
control options should evaluate the use of sign, traffic signal, and roundabout options and detenn ine the
most appropriate control for the palticular location. This will allow for a more appropriate and properly
customized design for each section and avoid the use of "standard or typical" designs. Moreover, this
approach will provide a properly justified and documented decision process based on sound engineering
judgment that cou ld become palt of the design file for the project.
