Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Title of Proposal: Studies on the Incidence and Management of Slugs and Snails in Soybean Fields: YEAR 2 • Principal Investigator(s): Raul T. Villanueva o Phone: (859) 562-1335 and (956) 373-5344 o Email: [email protected] o Co-Investigator: Zenaida Viloria • PI Business Address: 348 university Drive, Princeton KY, 42445 • Period of proposed project dates: April 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026 • Abstract: In 2024, the outbreaks of mollusks affected more than 30,000 acres of soybeans, and at least 25,000 acres used molluscicides to manage mollusks. Though most farmers affected by mollusk outbreaks were able to use the metaldehyde pellet baits successfully in most cases. Although our results in 2024 are positive for the management of snails and slugs, many aspects still need to be studied specifically the phenology of slugs and snails in Kentucky, management, and identification of species, and reasons of infestations by native snails. In this project we will study the use of alternative products such as new molluscicides, insecticides or nematicides, and finding natural enemy organisms (nematodes or mites), continue with the identification of slug and snail species. Results of this study will be delivered to end users through presentations, field days and conferences.
