Incorporating Row Covers into Muskmelon IPM with a Farming Systems Approach

Grants and Contracts Details

Description

The 2-year project will validate row-cover tactics to help cucurbit growers manage the cucumber beetle/bacterial wilt complex with fewer insecticide applications. Annual field trials in Iowa and Kentucky will optimize the timing of removal of spunbond row covers to suppress bacterial wilt in conventional and organic muskmelon production, and integrate these IPM tactics with streamlined methods for deploying and retrieving row covers. An economic analysis will compare the new strategies to current practices across a range of farm sizes and management strategies.
