Description
We propose a way of addressing a key question which asks how can professors
teach mathematics for teaching and how can our students learn the mathematics for
teaching in grades K-5. The ultimate goals of our long term project are to integrate
the standards and principles of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
(NCTM) into the content and methods courses for elementary school teachers at
the University of Kentucky, to increase the opportunity for collaboration between
mathematics and mathematics education faculty, and to do so in a way that is
transportable to other institutions. We will disseminate these ideas for adoption
both regionally (especially in Fayette County and Appalachia) and nationally. This
eighteen month project is the beginning phase of a longer program.
