Grants and Contracts Details

Description

Investigating Career Advancement for BIPOC Registered Dietitians The aim of this study is to identify and characterize the factors influencing the professional advancements of Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) who identify as black, indigenous, and persons of color (BIPOC). RDNs are food and nutrition experts who provide specialized nutrition-related care and expertise and are employed in diverse settings in the non- profit (37%), for-profit (39%), government (16%), and self-employed (8%). The most common places where dietitians to work are acute-care facilities, outpatient clinic or physician’s office, long-term care, social services or public health organizations, university or medical centers, and in school nutrition. Nationally, providers of Latinx ethnicity comprise less than 10% of physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, pharmacists, and registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs). A cross-sectional, online questionnaire will be designed for this study. A purposive sample was needed to recruit RDNs that met criteria: 1) currently a RDN for at least 12 months, 2) identifies as a black, indigenous, or persons of color and 3) consent to participate in the study. Data will be collected in July of 2024. Statistical support will be sought to identify sample size target and analysis methods. We expect to use descriptive statistics and other analyses such as confirmatory factor analysis, cluster analysis, and regression to characterize factors influencing professional advancement of BIPOC RDNs. The data gathered will be used to develop recommended strategies that will lead to opportunities for professional growth through advancement and leadership areas for BIPOC RDNs.
