Grants and Contracts Details
Description
Overview:
The purpose of this application is to request Phase II funding and the continued support of the
National Science Foundation for the Center for Arthropod Management Technologies (CAMTech) under
the Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program. Iowa State University and
University of Kentucky (UK) were the founding partner I/UCRC university sites in CAMTech.
University of Florida (UF) is applying to be the lead site for Phase II, and UK proposes
continuation as the second center site for the duration of the Phase II award. The major goals of
CAMTech include 1) forging collaborations among industry, government, and academia for conducting
cutting-edge research aimed at the development of novel pest control methods and 2) to train
graduate students and post- doctoral fellows for employment in pest control industry. The
development of new pest management approaches is critical for the production of sufficient food for
the increasing human population, and for prevention of arthropod-transmitted disease to plants and
to humans. The need for new approaches is exacerbated by climate change with more widespread pest
distribution associated with changing climatic conditions, and by increasing restrictions on
current technologies. The economic losses associated with arthropod pests are second only to losses
that result from natural disasters. The global pesticide market is expected to reach > $81 billion
in 2021. CAMTech currently has 11 members (5 assigned to UK), including all of the major players
in the agricultural biotechnology industry and good representation from the public health industry.
These companies are actively engaged to advise in the project selection and
refinement process, and are valuable contributors to center research and training missions.
