Description
Conduct a literature review to detennine when high-strength quenched 8: tempered
(Q8:T) steels were first employed on bridges in the l;.s. Review the evolution of the ASTM·AA.SHTO
standard steels including adoption of fracture-touglmess tests. Identify previous problems encountered
with those steels including low lOughness, susceptibility 10 weld cracking and stress corrosion''hydrogen
stress cracking.
Review the KYTC bridge inventory to identify existing steel bridges that GOuld have potentiaJJ)
employed high-strength Q 8:. T steels.
Review plans/materials lists for the bridges that potentiallv could possess Q 8: T steels and identify any
tbat contained those steels (and the relevant stmctural members).
Perfonn bardness tests on potential bridges/structural members where documentation is lacking to
detemline if they possess Q 8: T steel.
Provide KYTC with a list of bridges containing Q & T steel along with recommendations/guidelines for
follow-on investigations, inspections
