Abstract
KHIT 159, MASH Analysis of KYTC’s Standard Drawings
KYTC''s Standard Drawings encompass technical drawings and specifications that provide guidelines
for the design and construction of highway-related infrastructure. Topics covered by these drawings
include roadway design, roadside design, drainage, traffic control, and bridge design. The Division of
Highway Design maintains oversight of KYTC’s Standard Drawings.
The AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) contains guidelines for testing and
evaluating roadside safety hardware in real-world crash scenarios, including crash cushions,
guardrails, and barriers.
A Joint Implementation Agreement approved by state departments of transportation, AASHTO,
FHWA, and industry representatives gave deadlines by which new permanent installations and full
replacements of safety hardware needed to comply with 2016 MASH criteria. Dates varied by type
of safety hardware. For many devices, the deadline was on or before December 31, 2019.
Over the past few years, KYTC has updated its Standard Drawings to ensure they meet the latest
safety standards and guidelines, including those outlined in the 2016 MASH criteria. To facilitate this
process, KYTC asked the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to conduct MASH analyses of
relevant Standard Drawings and identify areas where updates or revisions are needed to achieve
compliance with MASH guidelines. The goal of this project is to ensure that roadside safety
Standard Drawings are up to date and comply with the latest safety standards and guidelines so that
KYTC delivers the safest and most effective transportation infrastructure possible for the people of
Kentucky.
