KHIT 72, Bridge Repair Using High Performance Materials

Abstract: The outside girder on the KY 81 bridge (075B00025N) has severe spalling of concrete and rusting of exposed steel. The other girders have moderate spalling of concrete and rusting of exposed steel. The bridge (075B00025N) is located on KY 81 between KY 2385 and KY 1589 in McLean Co., KY in KyDOH District 2. The objective of this study is to repair the bridge using high performance materials. The repair involves removal of unsound concrete in the spalled regions, cleaning of the rusted steel bars, application of primer and bonding agents, and application of concrete mortar. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) rod panels and high strength resin will be applied on the outside girder that had exposed and rusted steel.
